"By the Code of Soil" - an excerpt from the video recording of the virus behaviour

By the Code of Soil

"By the Code of Soil" was a networked, data-driven artwork - a harmless computer virus - that was activated on participating computers when the Sentinel-1A satellite passes above the computer’s location – approximately twice every 24 hours but never at the same time of the day.

When the virus was active - it took over a user’s computer for around 2 minutes, displaying an artistic representation of soil moisture, temperature and light data from the cluster of soil sensors in the place closest to the participating computer.

This data gave the beginning of audio/visual performance - an animtion every time different which started as a system of a visual noise made first with a single pixel - a grain, which gradually became a noise forming frequencies, movements and animated shapes; The data drvien sound was inspired by “granular synthesis” - moving from a single note to multilayered audioscape - always different, depending on the incoming data values

The virus was active from 05 of December 2018 (International Soil Day), until October 2019. Then deactivated it removed itself from the particpating computers. The record of its various manifestations is now in a form of 3 channel video installations of various length.
